BTECs are the most widely approved Vocational qualifications
on the new DfE List

On 31st January the Department for Education published the new lists for non-GCSE qualifications which will contribute to headline
measures (5A*-C and 5A*-G) in 2014.

Looking beyond the immediate headlines this actually represents a major endorsement of the place of Vocational learning in the 14-16 curriculum. The last year has seen the most thorough review of vocational learning in a generation and at the end of this we have a clear picture of how qualifications like BTEC should feature in a broad and balanced curriculum offer.

While the government has substantially reduced the overall number of qualifications that contribute to the 5 A*-C measure, the new eligible list includes a very good range of our qualifications.

Of course, there are a handful of areas where we have not seen our qualifications recognised, and we will be continuing to engage with Ofqual on these. But overall, we can be pleased with the outcomes for our centres and learners so far. The vast majority of our current learners will see their programmes continuing to be recognised in headline measures in the future.

Finally...

We continue to work with Ofqual on the accreditation of our Next Generation of Level 1/Level 2 BTEC Firsts. We will continue to work with the Government, teachers and other education experts to ensure our next generation of BTECs, which provide even greater stretch, will help learners achieve their potential in the future and also count in the headline measures. We’ll know the outcome of this when the final list is published in early March.

We want to thank all of our centres and learners who have helped us get to this point, where BTEC is recognised as being synonymous with quality vocational provision, but we realise that the real work starts here.
